Supervisor José Medina Calls for Investigation Into Possible Misuse of Public Resources by Sheriff Chad Bianco

March 31, 2026

RIVERSIDE, CA — Riverside County First District Supervisor José Medina has formally requested that District Attorney Michael Hestrin investigate whether public resources were used inappropriately by Sheriff Chad Bianco in connection with political activity tied to his campaign for higher office.

In a March 26 letter, Supervisor Medina called for a thorough and impartial review of potential misuse of taxpayer-funded staff time, county equipment, official events, and public communication channels. The request also asks for an examination of whether official duties and campaign-related activity may have been improperly blurred.

“Public service comes with a responsibility to protect the public’s trust,” Medina said. “If taxpayer-funded resources were used for political purposes, the public deserves a full and independent review.”

The request comes amid increased public attention surrounding the Sheriff’s actions, including his now-paused election-related investigation.

Supervisor Medina is asking for a full review of communications, scheduling records, and public resource usage, along with public disclosure of findings and corrective action if necessary. The letter was also sent to California Attorney General Rob Bonta.

“Regardless of party or position, no one should use public office as a platform for campaign activity at taxpayer expense,” Medina added.
